The Gerrit Noordzij Prize In 1996 teachers at the postgraduate course in Type Design and Typography (now Type and Media) at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague decided to establish a prestigious prize to recognize those who have played an important and internationally acknowledged role in type design and typography. The initators immediatly had the thought of naming this prize after Gerrit Noordzij, who for years had taught these practices with such dedidaction in the Department of Graphic Design. His remarkable contribution lives on in the work of his students such as Petr van Blokland, Peter Matthias Noordzij, Peter Verheul, Frank Blokland, Luc(as) de Groot, Erik van Blokland, Just van Rossum, Rudy Vanderlans and many others.
Awarded type designers: 1997: Gerrit Noordzij, 2000: Fred Smeijers, 2003: Erik Spiekermann, 2006: Tobias Frère-Jones. In 2009 one of the most important graphic designers of its generation 'Wim Crouwel' was awarded. The exhibition with his work will be scheduled in spring 2012. A big thanks to Jan Willem Stas, Erik van Blokland, their colleagues and their students.
